About

Early abstract steel sculpture by James Prestini (1908-1993) acquired directly from the estate via Steven Wolf Fine Arts in San Francisco about 18 years ago. This was part of his early work that was never available to the public, a transitional piece when he shifted from wood bowl turning to working in metal and later sculptures of highly polished nickel plated steel. The circle and cylinder form is constructed of a rough steel that has developed a patina from over the years and is resting on a unpolished marble base, marked and signed by the artist, Prestini #78. Prestini started as a mechanical engineer, studying at Yale in 1930 and later at the University of Stockholm. From 1936-1946 Prestini was an instructor at the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He became known for his wood bowls in the late 1930s which were placed in many museums, the MoMA NY for one, as examples of good design and craft during the 1950s. He created experimental furniture and was later a professor of design in the School of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley starting in 1956.
