About the Item

This moon sculpture by Mikel Durlam and Monty J is a collaborative piece from their 2017 two-person show at Greenpoint Hill. The slip-cast porcelain moon is made from an original hand-sculpted by the artists and supported by a black ceramic stoneware column adorned with brass wire. The work comes in two pieces - the moon balances on the column and can be rotated or picked up and admired. Durlam and Monty J create dreamlike sculptural interpretations of the natural world. Their work defies categorization, synthesizing elements of design, visual poetry and surrealism. Durlam’s work presents a modern approach to representational sculpture. Monty J’s otherworldly living sculptures offer a more abstract take. Working together in a communal studio space in Brooklyn, Durlam and Monty J have created an ethereal collection of objects that connect the viewer to the terrestrial world while also fostering dreams of another one, far from home. The sculpture measures 9.5” H x 7” W x 6” D. Mikel Durlam (b. Fort Dodge, IA) creates exquisite ceramic works as a synthesis of his love of design, handmade production, and visual poetry. His surreal work presents a contemporary approach to representational sculpture. His work was included in the Greenpoint Hill collection featured in Architectural Digest's 2018 Best of Brooklyn Designs. Monty J. Mattison (b. Detroit, MI) - known simply as Monty J - toils through the night perfecting his exquisite living sculptures. Monty has recently exhibited work at Greenpoint Hill, The Future Perfect and Barneys New York. His work has been featured in T Magazine and was included in the Greenpoint Hill collection noted as the Best in Brooklyn Designs 2018 by Architectural Digest.
