Modernist Ceramic Clay Sculpture by Winslow Anderson, 1941

About

Created by Winslow Anderson in 1941 while a student at Alfred University. Measure: 6" tall, 13" wide and 7" deep. This example is particularly heavy for its size. Signed with Winslow Anderson's signature and name. Created prior to his departure to the war, few examples exist of his work at New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred, New York. Has a thick brown glaze to the table sculpture and communicates a very abstract origami object. Has beautiful lines and curves and clearly, Anderson was influenced by the work of Cubist Alexander Archipenko. Winslow Anderson would later be selected to become the head designer at Blenko Glass and Lenox and create iconic designs that are still produced today. Some minute losses to high points on other sculptures, but undamaged. Provenance: Winslow Anderson estate; the Huntington Museum of Art. Possibly displayed in either the 11th or 12th National Ceramic Exhibition. Other examples of his work available, please see photos.
