"Radical Abstract" Wood Sculpture by Katsuhisha Sakai

About the Item

From the collection of Ruth Siegel owner for the Ruth Siegel Gallery in NYC on Madison Ave in the 1980s and 1990s. Katsuhisa Sakai was born in a bomb shelter in Tateyama City, Japan during the last 6 months of World War 2. Today at age 70 he is an accomplished sculptor, living and working in Los Angeles, and exhibiting his artwork internationally. His works, mostly built of wood and stone utilize ancient building techniques, but are playful and modern.

After completing her fine arts degree in the United States, she returned to Japan to complete a rigorous apprenticeship in traditional Japanese ceramics with a 13th generation master potter, Ichino Toshio, further defining her aesthetic. Brown works with high-fire stoneware clay that is fired in a 30-foot long Japanese style wood-firing tunnel kiln (anagama). For the past 20 years Joy has also worked in bronze, making figures from small to larger-than-life size. Currently, Joy has been completing various commissions in China for public spaces. Joy Brown’s work is in the public collections of many museums in the United States, Europe and Asia.
