Richard Hirsch Ceramic Ceremonial Vessel #10, Tripod Vessels Collection, 1994

About the Item

Contemporary American ceramic artist Richard Hirsch's Tripod Ceremonial Vessel #10 is raku-fired, hand built and hand sculptured. The tripod is uniquely with bronze acrylic, iron-rust interactive acrylic, airbrushed enamels (red, green and yellow) all layered on top of each other. Signed by the artist, each piece is comprised of a marriage of four elements -- a vessel held aloft by three legs. The process of fluid transition between the elements so that the product reads as one form was vital as he built the foundation for his signature collection. The Tripod Vessels Collection is made up of Ceremonial Cups, The Skirted Series, The Coper-Metti Series, The Round Series, Ceremonial Vessels, The Helmut Series, The Cone Series, The V Series, Space Vessels, The Line Series, The Round Series and The Weapon Series. They were photographed as a pair, but price below is per piece. Shown from left to right are Ceremonial Vessel #11 (11½" x 10½" x 10") - SOLD and Ceremonial Vessel #10 (11½" x 12" x 12") is still available. Provenance: These sculptures were acquired directly from Richard Hirsch. Richard Hirsch Brief Bio: In the field of contemporary ceramic, Rick Hirsch has earned an international reputation. He has achieved this recognition by engaging in numerous diversified professional activities. Through efforts in university teaching, exhibits, writing, lecturing and researching he has risen to worldwide prominence. In 1975, Hirsch co-authored a book entitled Raku, published by Watson-Guptill. This was the first comprehensive text to address the new innovations developing in the west that were transforming traditional Japanese Raku. Also, in the same year, Hirsch became a founding faculty member of The Program in Artistry at Boston University. Currently, Hirsch is a Professor Emeritus at The School for American Crafts which is a part of Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. His university teaching career now spans well over four decades. Repeatedly, Hirsch has participated in several milestone exhibitions and publications. Significant shows include; The Evolution of American Art in Craft Media Since 1945; Echoes: Historical References in Contemporary Ceramics; American Ceramics Now; Raku: Origins, Impact and Contemporary Expression; and Convergences: The Presence of the Past in Contemporary American Ceramics. Frequently his work appears in book and magazine publications, such as; overseas contemporary ceramic art Classics by Baiming, China; Raku Investigations into Fire by David Jones, England; The History of American Ceramics from 1607 to the Present by Elaine Levin, New York; World Contemporary Ceramics by Baiming, China; and Firing, Philosophies within Contemporary Ceramic Practice by David Jones, England. Several museums have included his work for their permanent collections. These include; The Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; The Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC; The High Museum of Art, Atlanta; The Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse; The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri; The Taipei County Yinko Ceramics Museum, Taipei, Taiwan; and the George R. Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, Toronto, Canada. In 1984, Hirsch was elected as a permanent member of The International Ceramics Academy, a worldwide organization headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. A recipient of a William J. Fulbright Research Scholar Award in 2002, Hirsch has also received several Individual Artists Grants. Most recently he was honored by The Rochester Institute of Technology, with the Board of Trustees' Outstanding Scholarship Award. Recently Hirsch collaborated with Dr. Scott Meyer on his biography, the book is entitled With Fire: Richard Hirsch and is published by The Cary Graphic Arts Press at RIT, ISBN-13: 978-1-933360-97-3. Amid the ever-shifting sands of change and new trends that is prevalent in contemporary ceramics, Richard Hirsch has maintained his steadfast personal aesthetic and continues to make a significant contribution to his field.

  • Zoë Powell, Ceramic Vessel 07, Perianth Series, 2021
    By Zoë Powell
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
Title: Perianth 07 Year: 2021 Freeform ceramic sculpture made from a blend of porcelaneous and stoneware clays hand-collected by the artist in Minnesota. Its surface is hand-polished with diamond sandpaper to render a matte finish. Signed with the artist’s mark along the interior rim. Each piece is original and one of a kind. The forms in this collection are influenced by botanical morphology - specifically, the ‘perianth’ or floral envelope, whose petals serve to protect the most sensitive part of the plant before the eventual dispersal of the fruit’s seed. Powell’s sculptures seek to evoke a similar feeling of comfort and protection, serving as reminders of another time, both past and future, when one's family is close and the world feels safe, offering an escape from the ephemerality of the present which can leave one feeling vulnerable and exposed. The Perianth series functions both as a personal etiology for the artist and as a broader exploration of the universal themes of nostalgia, sentimentality, and familial memory In terms of process, Powell is interested in manipulating material into something it essentially is not - shaping crude, raw clay, still studded with naturally occurring sands and stones, into incredibly delicate forms. The resulting pieces are light and elegant — impossibly thin and balanced in surprising ways. Each sculpture’s surface, riddled with scrapes and craters, is astonishingly soft and sensuous to the touch and each piece feels precious in such a finessed and attenuated state. This concept of defied expectations extends beyond the physical properties of the work in that Powell is also investigating the mutability of perception, specifically in terms of Perianth’s overarching nostalgia and memory themes - - the present is intimidating in its authenticity, with no space for embellishment or fantasy, while memories of, and the subsequent yearning for, an era, place or person can become nebulous and fictionalized with distance and time. In this way, the works in this series act as physical manifestations of the unanticipated and misremembered. - - - - - - - - - - - - ABOUT THE ARTIST: Zoë Powell...
