Materials: Oak

In Pietschmann’s sculptures, trees that for centuries were part of a landscape and founded in primordial forces tell stories inscribed in the memory of their fibres.
The forms Jörg Pietschmann pares from ancient trees are extensive and astonish with their physical presence, a combination of elegance and primeval nature. Pietschmann’s sculptures are monuments to the trees from which they derive.
Being endowed with the ruggedness of primeval matter gives them a veritable vitality: figures that appear to have grown into their sculptural form of their own accord. But Pietschmann’s tangibly present bodies have undergone a considerable degree of metamorphosis.
In order to generate these unique tree specimens he examines the tree’s morphology and intrinsic inner map until the courses of its grain, of a curve, knots and cracks concur with his projections. The exploratory process is accompanied by constant modification, giving at the start of each new piece no more than an intimation of the figure that will later emerge. In their completion, Pietschmann’s sculptures once more become universal form.
Jörg Pietschmann's workshop is situated on the countryside close to Hamburg. He works with indigenous timber as oak, lime tree, beech, poplar, olive tree and maple felled by the wind or human hand, together with tropical timber found on his travels.

Galerie Philia
Galerie Philia is an international contemporary sculptural design and art gallery representing emerging and established designers and artists. The gallery is the brainchild of two brothers who share a lifetime passion for art, literature and philosophy. Their distinct academic background sets them apart from their peers, as it sees them following a rhizomatic and transcultural approach in the way they select works. This involves combining elements from multiple cultures in what becomes a network of harmoniously interconnected roots, ultimately revealing the beauty of each unique creation. The gallery’s non-hierarchical curation sits apart from the ephemerality of trends and focuses instead on the true aesthetic quality of the piece – alluring and timeless. Unlike others, Galerie Philia does not focus on a single style – whether minimalist, organic or raw – but rather embraces heterogeneity. The Galerie Philia takes pride in discovering new talents, providing them with multiple international platforms to showcase their latest creations. As well as propelling the newest generation of 21st century collectible design, Galerie Philia also works with internationally known design artists. Galerie Philia has a strong international presence, with galleries in Geneva, New York and Singapore. In addition to their permanent spaces, the gallery organizes temporary group exhibitions and artists residencies in first-class locations around the world.

- Njal, Unique Blue Glass & Oak Unique Sculpture by Backhaus & Brown and EgeværkBy Backhaus & Brown and EgevÆrkLocated in London, GB'Njal' from the Glasskibe Collection is a unique glass and oak sculpture by the Danish and British artists, Backhaus & Brown and Egeværk. The title explained by the artists; "Njal is a Viking boy’s name that means giant. Viking names were often given special characteristics and bestowed strength and protection in life. We know the names of the Vikings from runic inscriptions and place names, among other things. Many of these names are specific to the Nordic countries". The Danish town of Hundested is steeped in maritime history and richly from the Viking Age. It is the majestic imagery of the Viking ships passing that has inspired two of the harbour’s contemporary craft companies; cabinetmakers Egeværk and glass artists Backhaus & Brown. These two award-winning workshops have combined their masterful crafts in an innovative collaboration; namely a series of sculptures named ”Glasskibe” – Viking ships in hand-blown glass and carved oak. Artworks from this collection have been sold to many private collectors but have also been purchased for the Vikingskipshuset, the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo and more recently, shown at the Danish Pavilion during the 2016 Olympics in Rio. A unique collaboration in the truest sense, drawing on the skills of two crafts, based in two workshops and from two Nationalities, British and Danish.
