Valdivian Owl Stele Sculpture

About

A pre-Colombian (Equador) stele depicting a abstract owl. These sculptures are typical for the Valdivian Early Horizon culture (2300-2000 BCE). This culture is among the oldest of the region and for their sculptures they used a pearly grey stone. Very skillfully they depicted their surrounding world. Most common are owls, serpents and sun- starcharts. The owl was believed to be a guide to the divine and afterlife and therefore held a special attraction in the shamanic spiritual believes of these ancient people. Although more than 4000 years old this work of art still has a modern feel about it. The attraction is enhanced by the subtle patina.
