Pekingese Puppy 18th Century French Faience Made in Rouen Circa 1760

About the Item

WHY WE LOVE IT: His Pekingese imperial attitude!                                                                                               In their native China, Pekingese could only be owned by the imperial family and were said to date back to the Han dynasty, more than two millennia ago. We are pleased to offer this 18th century Rouen Faience figure of a puppy naturalistically modeled, painted with floppy ears, bulging eyes, and a topknot. He is seated on a green rectangular base. This charming puppy will make a wonderful addition to any dog lover’s home. Requires little care except for occasional dusting. Dimensions: 8" tall x 6.5" long x 3.5" wide Condition: Excellent Price: $1700 Background of French Faience: Faience is the conventional name in English for fine tin-glazed pottery on a buff earthenware body. However, the name comes from French as a term for Italian Majolica from Faenza in northern Italy. The invention of a white pottery glaze suitable for painted decoration by adding an oxide of tin was a significant advance in the history of pottery. The invention was made in Iran or the Middle East before the 9th century.

The wide border shows six flower buds on the vine, and along the edge are scrolling vines.
