A beautifully modelled portrait study of a dog it looks up from it looks up keenly towards it’s master.
On a marble base.
Pierre-Jules Mene (1810-1879)
Mene was a French sculptor known as an animalier due to his skill in depicting animals. He is considered one of the pioneers of 19th century lost wax animal sculptures, his works having not only a lifelike look but also personality. He specialised in small bronze figures, which is why no large works exist as public artworks.
His work was widely produced and remains hugely popular, he is still regarded as one of the finest animal sculptors of all time.
