The story of a remarkable 19th century anatomical model created just four years after Darwin unleashed a political storm with his theories on human evolution.
The publication of Charles Darwin’s controversial On the Origin of Species in 1859 caused debates to rage about human evolution, debates which witnessed the politicisation of a creature whose existence had only recently been confirmed by modern science. On one side of the argument was the Darwinian camp; on the other were those opposed to Darwin’s theory, such as Richard Owen, the famed Director of the Natural History Museum and a man who, interestingly, coined the word ‘dinosaur’.
Tales of the creature in question had endured for centuries, but up until 1847 it remained a myth, an unknown. This all changed thanks to the missionary Thomas Savage and the anatomist Jeffries Wyman who wrote a paper for the journal of the Boston Society of Natural History in which they described a new species: Troglodytes gorilla. He created portrait work for the White House, State Capitol buildings in D.C and Tennessee, for the Houston Astrodome and has won many commissions for monuments across the US.
For over a quarter of a century, nationally celebrated, William Behrends has created the iconic portraits on the Borg- Warner Trophy cup for the Indy 500 winners along with other commissions.

This monumental work is inspired on the famous quote of Darwin. “If everyone were cast in the same mould, there would be no such thing as beauty.” It is because of this quote that we added Darwin to our name Darwin, Sinke & van Tongeren. This quote also fits our goal to do all our taxidermy work without the use of factory moulds that are typical for contemporary taxidermy.
We sculpt all our bodies by hand and therefor can create the unique poses like how they line up in this mayor work. We combined many different birds with many different features from many different points of the compass. Together they form a 17th Century like composition of colours and poses. This collection varies from the rare African Congo Peafowl and a gracious Stanley Crane to a regular Dutch chicken.

The French Egyptian Revival style or the retour d'Egypte refers to style that makes use of the motifs and imagery of ancient Egypt. By the end of the 18th century enthusiasm for ancient Egypt generated by Napoleon's unsuccessful conquest of Egypt and, in Britain, to Admiral Nelson's defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. Napoleon took a scientific expedition with him to Egypt and this was the first time a major study of ancient Egypt was done. Publication of the expedition's work, the description de l'Égypte, began in 1809 and came out in a series though 1826 influencing a new way of life in France thru architecture and decorative arts. However, works of art, decorative arts, furniture and, in the field of architecture and garden follies, funerary monuments in the Egyptian style had appeared in scattered European settings from the time of the Renaissance.
The Egyptian Revival style came out in a few waves in France before Napoleon during the ancient Régime Egyptian motifs were mixed with the neoclassical-Louis XVI style in architecture, furniture and decorative arts. A big surge hit France around 1798 during Napoleons Egyptian expedition. This was the first major Egyptian Revival period as this was the first time in history that a major study on Egypt was done. French people became fascinated with the ancient Egyptian history, culture, architecture and furniture. Egyptian ornamentation like scarab beetles, sphinxes, winged lions and lotuses details were incorporated into Classical style furniture and decorative arts creating a style known as a hybrid neo-Egyptian.
The next wave was during the height of the French Romantic period 1820s-1850s. The Egyptian Revival emerged as a result of the famous archaeological digs of the first half of the 19th century and was primarily used for Tomb memorials, temples, and cemeteries and some decorative arts. This style is distinguished by its adaptation of Egyptian forms and motifs, sphinxes guarding buildings including lotus blossoms, Pharaoh's heads, the winged disk symbol of the sun God, as well as the use of bold bright colors.
At the end of the 19th century 1870s-1890s the Egyptian Revival styles were in vogue once more. At the Height of the Victorian period the Egyptian style was even more elaborate than before. Often incorporated with Neo-Greek & Renaissance Revival styles. Rare and unique brutalist bar cabinet decorated with hand carved bear. Koncz Vilmos (1932 – 2006). He started painting at the age of 30, using the following techniques: charcoal, pastel, oil. He has had solo exhibitions eight times in Budapest, and his works have been featured in seventeen group exhibitions worldwide. He was an experimental creator. Its more than 420 works include glass mosaics, terracotta, copper embossing and furniture carving. After his death, most of his oeuvre was “lost”. A decade and a half passed from painting to the first carvings. Middle Eastern and African culture had a major impact on his further artistic work. Traveled and created in Baghdad, Kuwait, Beirut and Tanzania. He became acquainted with the ancient folk art of the Makonde tribe, with carvings of ebony and ivory, which changed his creative career. When he made an authentic bracelet out of ivory, decorated with African motifs, the members of the tribe welcomed him among themselves. He became the tribe’s "Mister Vili." An exhibition of his painted paintings was held at the Kilimanjaro Hotel. He learned the machining of copper from the Arabs and the making of glass mosaics, and the tricks of jewelry making from the Hindus. He had forty large sculptures erected in various settlements of Hungary, mostly multi-field, made with a circular carving technique. Everything from ornaments on the table to the three-meter-high monument was found in his oeuvre. The Tiszakürt Arboretum also houses two wooden sculptures made of circular carvings: Tasso and the Tanzanian family tree. Donated works of his hometown: the 1956 headboard, the “Jászok” and “Kunok” (Old Hungarian Tribes), the “Flute”, the “Kolompolás” (Ringing the Bell) and the “Winged Altar”. In the 1980s, he also made carvings for the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden. His Ars Poetic was: “I do what I love, which drives from within, because I want to leave marks behind that I once existed and perhaps not uselessly” (2002). A very fine Italian 19th century Carrara marble life-size marble sculpture of "Hebe and The Eagle"; depicting a young maiden seated on a rocky outcrop holding an urn over her shoulder and serving water from a bowl to a thirsty eagle, raised on a circular base by Aristide Fontana (Italian 19th Century - Active 1870-1890), Carrara, Inscribed to the reverse; "Aristide Fontana Sc./Carrara", circa 1870-1880. Hebe, the Greek goddess of youth, was the daughter of Zeus and Hera and was the hand-maiden and cup bearer of the gods and the symbol of youthful beauty and chastity. She is often depicted as a temptress tantalizing the eagle of Jupiter with a cup of ambrosia and her body. In her role as cup-bearer she offered nectar and ambrosia and here she holds the cup before the eagle, Zeus' messenger. This sculpture subject matter resembles Bertel Thorwaldsen's, marble sculpture of Ganymede and the Eagle, circa 1817 and currently at the Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, VA. The most notable difference between both sculptures is that, unlike in Thorwaldsen's work, this sculpture depicts a figure of a young semi-nude maiden bearing a pearl necklace centered with a charm engraved with the letter "S". This sculpture subject matter can also be attributed to Psyche, perched on a Stygian rock and threatened by dragons, is rescued from her task by Jupiter's eagle, who brings her a lekythos filled with the river's water. Although Apuleius' story of Cupid and Psyche had been a common theme in European art since the Renaissance, the particular incident of Psyche rescued by Jupiter's eagle was seldom illustrated.
Comparable to themes in mythology, Old Testament figures and heroines in particular were popular subjects of artworks in the mid-19th century. Several scenes from the Biblical (Gen. 24) story of Rebecca's meeting with Eliezer, and subsequent marriage to Isaac, were depicted in the 19th century. The most frequent representation shows Rebecca at the well with a pitcher. Other examples of the subject include those by the Italians Cesare Lapini, Giovanni Battista Lombardi and Domenico Menconi and American sculptors Brown, Mozier, and Chauncey Bradley Ives...

This important George III tazza is attributed to famed Scottish-Swedish architect Sir William Chambers. The magnificent piece features a base carved from statuary marble in the shape of a stylized dolphin, which relates to Chambers' extraordinary 18th-century architectural designs. A marvel of beauty and craftsmanship, the tazza is also inset with specimens of Derbyshire Blue John in both the plinth and bowl. Blue John is one of the most in-demand decorative stones in the world, and its inclusion in this piece elevates the tazza to a true Georgian masterpiece.
Due to its popularity, the largest veins of Blue John had disappeared by the early 19th century, and only a small amount of the stone remains today. Because of its scarcity, most examples of Blue John furniture feature only small inset veneers. By contrast, this rare tazza features not one, but two substantial specimens of the stone. It represents some of the last ornamental wares created of such grand size and proportion, though other smaller examples still grace the stately British estates of Chatsworth, Hardwick, Kedleston and Haddon, among others.
Not only does this tazza boast a highly rare material, but it was also designed by one of the most important architects and designers of the Georgian era.
