About

Archaic silver tetradrachm from the city of Akanthos, on the Chalcidian peninsula, circa 470 BC. The front of the coin with a lion leaping onto a large bull, sinking its teeth and claws into the creature's rump. The reverse with a four part incuse punch. An unusually dynamic, sculptural work of archaic art. Weight: 17.20 g. Measure: Diameter 26.45 mm. Provenance: British private collection, acquired 1960s-1970s. Spink, 2nd December 2013, lot 10.
