Erik Nielsen for Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Sleeping Tabby Cat

About the Item

Charming vintage sculpture of a sleeping grey and white tabby cat was designed by Erik Nielsen for Royal Copenhagen. Highly detailed porcelain figurine was hand-decorated with extra attention to cat's face, ears, and fur. The sculpture is marked on the bottom with the company logo, "Crown and ROYAL COPENHAGEN" stamp, in green color under the glaze, that is used since 1923, blue waves trademark, and the decorator's initials. Thea small line in the stamp under 2d E in "Copenhagen" indicates that the piece was manufactured in 1975-1979. Erik Nielsen (1857-1947) was a renowned Danish designer; he was educated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1885-86, and worked at Bing & Grondahl Porcelain Manufactory as a modelmaker in 1886-87. During his short tenure at Bing & Grondahl Nielsen created some of their best-known sculptures, such as Heron and Seagull. From 1887 to 1926 Nielsen was employed by the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain.
