French Folk Art Owl Decoy - Bird Scarer, 1930s

About the Item

There is a great deal of rawness and authenticity to this 1930s French owl decoy. It is carved in wood and nail - upholstered with some kind of animal leather. Its eyes and beak is made from bakelite. The base has been added in recent times and has a great look still retaining its thatch and bark. It was bought just recently at a fleamharked near Lyon in France. Measurements: H: 48 cm (on stand), W/D: 12/12 cm. The owl it self measures 38 cm in length being slightly tilted on the stand.

    Additions or alterations made to the original: The base has been added in recent times and has a great look still retaining its thatch and bark. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. Decorative condition. This 90 year old object shows signs of significant ware and patina. It is stabile but has marks, spots, rust and authenticity.

This collection of three Black Americana baseball figures, circa 1930s-1940s, are attributed to the San Antonio folk artist, Control Valadez. The set of Black memorabilia, sometimes called Black Americana, includes a pitcher, catcher & batter, each having been set and raised onto a custom iron base. They are all quite chippy with losses, nice patina and showing of age, still retaining much of their original paint colors.
