Hand-Carved Wooden Midcentury Two Monkey Sculpture Out of Tropical Tree Trunk
About the Item
Rare and remarkable monkey sculpture.
This wonderful sculpture is entirely carved out of one piece of tropical wood. These intelligent monkeys are long-tailed macaques and this type of art is both stylish and humorous. The one standing on the shoulders of the other looks to be scanning the area for food or danger. The perfectly natural and organic root makes this handcrafted sculpture extra special and it also has the most beautiful color. The black eyes are inlaid pieces of wood (probably ebony) and this sculpture is in excellent condition. We first thought that this piece was Japanese, but it is probably from Indonesia or Thailand where these monkeys are, in some temples, seen as sacred animals. We cannot find any comparable monkey sculptures anywhere in the world which makes this work of ´monkey business´ extra special.
