Large French Art Deco Parcel Gilt &Silver Bronze of a Stylized Gazelle A. Kéléty

About the Item

A large French Art Deco bronze sculpture of a gazelle in bronze with parcel gilt and silver on fluted self base. This rare and artistic damascened, non inlaid finish epitomizes the grace and elegance of the animal featuring slender legs, a level back and long neck. A darker toned side stripe accents this statue as well as geometric facial markings, and a light gilt colored reflective coat. It was Kéléty's artistic discretion here to showcase his subject as a highly stylized deer, stag, antelope, gazelle or whatever his imagination could create for him. Beautifully cast like a piece of jewelry and initialed under the legs; stamped Made in France and numbered #3. -------------------------- Alexandre Kéléty (1874-1940) was a Hungarian artist, painter, engraver and sculptor born in Budapest. He studied under Imre Karoly Simay, a famous animal sculptor and painter in Hungary. Kéléty is best known as an animal sculptor. Even though Budapest became a center of arts and culture, Kéléty decided to emigrate to France at the end of the 1st World War and studied in Toulouse. His sculptures were shown on the stands of Goldscheider and Etling at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts of 1925. He also exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs of 1927. Among his numerous animal bronzes, Kéléty produced dramatic, sentimental and decorative representations and sometimes mixed bronze and ivory, and sculpted marble and other stones.

  • French Bronze Rare Sculpture of a Panther Bunting Signed André Vincent Becquerel
    By André Vincent Becquerel
Located in New York City, NY
A rare and fabulous French Art Deco large bronze signed sculpture of a bunting panther by Andre Vincent Becquerel, French, 1893-1981 This lovely cast, in a warm dark brown patina with green undertones is sculpted with highly stylized anatomical details. The sculpture rests on self base. Becquerel's favorite subject matter was cats. He often captured them in a natural setting, stretching, stalking, clawing at a tree stump or walking in tandem. The model offered here with the panther bunting/rubbing against a stump of a tree is a rare version. This innate feline behavior is seen as a sign of affection, or of a transfer of their scent to claim territory or marking you as a friend. Becquerel was born in northern France. He attended the École des Beaux-arts in Paris and studied in the ateliers of Hector Lemaître and Prosper Lecourtier, the Animalier sculptor. He also worked with Charles Valton, who had studied under both Barye and Fremiet, two other renown animalier sculptors. He began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1914 and continued to do so for the rest of his career. In 1944 Becquerel was awarded a bronze medal by The ‘Artistes Français’ and a gold medal in 1945. In 1952 he won the Prix de l’Yser, which made him hors concours and thus above the future competition process.
