Pair of 18th Century Italian Water-Gilt Fragment Horse Head Sculptures

About the Item

Pair of 18th century Italian gold-leaf fragment horse head sculptures. The pair is made of 18th century Italian water-gilt fragments mounted on scroll wood bases. The fragments come from historic churches, buildings, and pieces from Tuscany. The shape and movement of the pieces perfectly coordinate with the parts of horses' heads to capture the illusion of the figurative shapes. The left horse head has a blue eye and the right horse has a red eye made from glass. The piece is put together by Filippo Gherardi, an Italian artist and restorer from Livorno. The date of manufacture reflects when he created the piece and the period shows that the fragments that make up the pair are originally 18th century. The Italian 18th century fragment horse heads are a unique and extremely rare pair created by a master Italian restorer and artist. The pair is a contemporary interpretation of the historically significant pieces - creating a whimsical and dynamic duo through Rococo-Modern design.

18th century Italian vase mounted with a fossil barnacle cluster and sitting on a petrified wood and barnacle base. This fragment is from a church in Florence. It was found and saved from the historic flooding of the Arno River in 1966. The piece has been naturally distressed from the flood. There is still the original paint and silt left on the piece to uphold the integrity, craftmanship, and history of sculptural fragment. The Rococo vase has been preserved and transformed with the natural specimens - it sits on top of the piece and where the neck of the vase was broken off, it is replaced with barnacles to look as though it evolved together over time.
