Pair of Antique Faience Lions

About

A superb pair of antique faience lions holding candlesticks. These lions have lots of personality with friendly smiling faces. Made in Italy in the mid-19th century. They have coats with a warm golden color which enhances the blue and gold of the candlesticks, and the oval pedestal bases. Background of Faience: Faience is the conventional name in English for fine tin-glazed pottery on a buff earthenware body. The invention of a white pottery glaze suitable for painted decoration, by the addition of an oxide of tin to the slip was a major advance in the history of pottery. The invention seems to have been made in Iran or the Middle East before the 9th century.
