About
A pair of late 17th-early 18th century Buddhistic lions. Two males, of left and right pairing each sitting on a rectangular plinth with a wish granting ball under one paw and a ribbon in their jaws. Finished with an incense holder at the back and a tasseled collar around their neck that descends to a plumage on the rear.
These Buddhistic lions are sculpted in pure white porcelain with symbols of the Buddha’s majesty and dignity, each one has different characteristics and profiles.
They appear in the 1688 Burghley Inventory: In “My Lords Anty Roome … 2 wt Lyons” in “China over ye Chimney”.
