Wonderfully modelled bronze sculpture of a sitting ox, made by Lambertus Zijl in 1916. Although it was probably made in a tiny batch, specimens of this very rare piece were to us hitherto unknown. The bronze is in an excellent condition and signed with the year and artist’s monogram on the side of the base (see last photo). Lambertus Zijl (1866-1947) is often seen as one of the innovators of Dutch sculpture at the beginning of the 20th century. After he got his degree at the Amsterdam School of Applied Arts he started his own firm with friend and fellow student Joseph Mendes da Costa. The firm ceased to exist only a few years later. Lambertus Zijl was very successful on his own executing commissions for making bronze and wooden wall reliefs among other things. Despite several big commissions Zijl got most satisfaction from sculpting smaller animals and human figures. Inspired by the work of Rodin and breaking with the conventional classical way of sculpting Zijl worked in a very distinctive, inventive style; a loose stroke and robust touch with (relatively) minor attention to finish. His way of working is therefore easily recognizable in the finished sculptures. A lot of commentators have characterized Zijl’s work as ‘Impressionistic’ since the surfaces of his sculptures are true spectacles of light.
