Staffordshire Porcelain Flatback Large Size African Zebra on Grassy Mound c1850

About the Item

This handsome mid-Victorian fellow features much detail with bold lines and subtle shading. He prances on a grassy mound in a left facing position and is a rare large size. Most Victorian figures were designed to stand on a shelf or mantlepiece and are therefore only modelled and decorated where visible from the front and sides. These are known as flatbacks. These were shaped either by press molding or slip casting. On the bottom there is a paper label marked "Oliver Sutton Antiques- Guaranteed Genuine 1850." Oliver Sutton was a famous antiques shop in South Kensington London that specialized in Staffordshire.
