Vintage Mexican Modernist Brass & Tessellated Abalone Grasshopper Lidded Dish
About the Item
A striking mid-century Mexican modernist sculptural lidded dish in the form of a grasshopper, executed in solid brass with vibrant tessellated abalone shell inlay. Designed in the iconic style of Los Castillo (Taxco, Mexico), circa 1960s–1970s.
The grasshopper features architectural brass legs and long swept-back antennae, with iridescent abalone shell inlaid along the removable wing/lid and head segments. The removable wings lift via a small brass ring handle to reveal a finished interior chamber suitable for use as a trinket box, vanity storage, or table accent.
Unsigned / unmarked. Attributed to the mid-century Mexican metalwork movement popularized by Taxco ateliers such as Los Castillo, Salvador Terán, and Peñoles, who pioneered the fusion of brass metalware with natural abalone mosaic.
