About the Item

Bronze sculpture with a green patina representing a walking lion (on a rectangular base), his head is slightly turned towards the left, laid on a naturalist base. Old casting proof, signed BARYE on base, at the front right. Edited by founder F.Barbedienne. Very good quality piece of work, light and delicate casting, with a fine original patina. Bibliography: Poletti & Richarme, Antoine Louis Barye Catalogue raisonné, Paris, Gallimard Editions, page 187 and 189 About the Artist Barye Antoine Louis, sculptor and painter, born in Paris on September, 15 1975 and died in Paris on June 29 1875, French school. One of the greatest French statuary expert in the 19th century. Son of a goldsmith, he may have learned from his own father. Ever since he was thirteen he had to make a living and became Fourier's apprentice, steel engraver for the military. This learning, in spite of its strictness, was very profitable for him because he was teached at his young age to all the metal working from casting to engraving. He entered the School of Beaux-Arts of Paris in 1818 where he received a classic formation by sculptor Bosio and painter Gros. In 1820, Barye was employed by goldsmith Jacques Henri Fauconnier where he made sculptures. He improved his anatomy knowledge by going to the menagerie of the national museum of natural history . In 1831 he became famous when he exhibited at the Salon his work entitled "Tiger eating a gavial" which was a real success and made him the very first romantic sculptor. Barye then opened his own foundry and released his own production himself. He became Ferdinand Philippe of Orleans' favourite sculptor and made him a table centerpiece. Later he became quasi official sculptor of Napoleon III and manufactured monumental works for the new museum of the Louvre. Barye has a great talent for portraying animals, their feelings if one may say so, their ferocity, their fears, their pain, their tragedies. Barye knew how to give his sculptures, animals or characters, no matter their dimensions, this monumental feature which is the mark of true genius.
