1950s Marianna von Allesch Midcentury Ceramic Pottery Head Sculpture

$3,800

About

A rare and unique head sculpture from artist Marianna von Allesch. The depiction, a woman, brings to mind early Greek and Minoan forms. This head sculpture is approximately 8 inches tall and about 7 inches in diameter around the top of the head. A ceramic with a creamy off white glaze with brownish incised decoration and it is signed at the back near the bottom. Black felt covers the bottom. Modern and abstract, yet with a decided antiquities feel. Marianna von Allesch was born in Bavaria, the daughter of a baroness and an officer of the Imperial Army. She defied parental wishes to devote her time to the Arts & Crafts, studying under European masters. Her first exhibition of blown glass in 1922 won her immediate fame. Within a few years, her glass figurines made in Thuringen became so popular that she had 6,000 glass blowers in her employ. Deflation in Europe caused her to move to America in 1928 and, from her New York studios, she turned her talents to ceramics, lamps and accessories. Her work is displayed in museums throughout the country. For the Morris Lapidus designed Americana Hotel (torn down in 2007) in Bal Harbor, Florida, Miss Von Allesch was commissioned to do the room and lobby lamps and the door escutcheons. Measurements: 7 inches x 7 inches x 8 inches high.
