"Cubist Head" Metal Sculpture by Kinzinger, 1927

About

A very fine example of Cubist sculpture, executed in gilt tin cut and shaped into human form, this piece was sculpted by Edmund Kinzinger, a German-born artist who settled in America in the 1920s and taught in Minnesota and Texas over a long career. This sculpture is especially ingenious, since Kinzinger cut the sheet of tin along the edges of the face, and pulled those pieces up, curling them to form the figure's hair. The gold-silvery patina is worn away in areas, perhaps deliberately by the artist, creating an antiqued appearance that is sophisticated and lovely. The piece is mounted on mahogany and the bottom is marked with the stamp of the artist's estate.
