Egyptian Carved Red Granite Head of a Pharaoh Ptolemaic Period Form

About

This fragment of a statue comes from the estate of the Ambassador to Morocco Joseph Verner Reed. He held this post from 1981-1985 and was then Chief of Protocol for the United States from 1989-1991. The Ambassador collected many antiquities as well as fine furniture and art from around the world and was a close personal friend of many Heads of State and government officials. Carved from red granite, a favored stone used in Egypt for obelisks and statues, this according to family paperwork was purchased as late period of the Ptolemies and while we cannot document this we are listing the piece as 20th century at 1st dibs request though it is obviously much earlier than that. Once part of a statuette of a pharaoh the head is now mounted on a custom-made base for display. Well worn but still visible are many details, broken at the neck and with a chip to the nose the face still is contemplative and timeless.
