Pair of Antique Tyrolean Terracotta Busts of a Bavarian Man and Woman
About the Item
These charming antique busts originate from the western Austrian state of Tyrol, which sits on the border of Bavaria in Germany. The pair are modelled as a Bavarian woodsman and his female companion, and evoke a sense of pastoral idyll and calm. Each bust is painted in pastel shades and supported on a socle base.
The style of the two busts shows influence from the Arts & Crafts movement, an international wave of design in the decorative and fine arts. The style originated in Britain in the early 19th century and ended in Europe in the early 20th century, lasting for a total period of approximately one hundred years. The movement held a strong influence on European art for much of the early 20th Century. The Arts and Crafts movement advocated for the use of traditional craftsmanship and simple forms of design. It incorporated and played upon a range of existing styles, including influences from the Medieval, Romantic and folk decorative tradition, as these beautiful antique busts do.
