Roman Marble Head of Athena, 1st Century AD

About

Roman marble head of Athena, circa 1st-2nd century AD. Her head turned slightly to the left, the lips once parted, the almond-shaped eyes framed by a sweeping brow and her hair swept backwards, in long, thick, wavy curls, covering the tops of the ears and gathering in a bunch at the nape of the neck. The top of the head is flat with an iron tenon protruding from the centre, likely once used to attach a bronze Corinthian helmet. Compare the Treu head, object 1884,0617.1 at the British Museum and a bust of Athena with later additions, object 1805,0703.56. Measures: Height 8 inches or 11 3/4 inches on base. Width 8 inches. Provenance: From the collection of a Danish nobleman, Slagelse, Denmark, acquired from the Palazzo Braschi, Rome, 1850. Kunsthallen Kunstauktioner, Copenhagen, auction 396, December 1990, lot 427. Subsequently in the collection of Danish sculptor, Hanne Varming.
