About the Item

Emmanuel Villanis (French, fl. 1880-1920), Art Nouveau bronze bust of the young "Sahpho". Signature & Marks: ?E. Villanis.? Foundry seal of the Socie´te´ des bronzes de Paris. This wonderful antique French bronze bust captures the erotic and beautiful "Sahpho," the whole being of the utmost quality in cast and completion. The dark-brown patina gradually becomes nearly black in areas while a rusty oxidization was employed to add surface depth across her body. Her hair has great depth and texture, with an interesting patination that results in an almost "dusty" quality. The word "Sahpho" and the crescent in her hair are elevated from the overall form in a gilded patina. The back of the sculpture is sealed with the "Socie´te´ des bronzes de Paris" importer seal, which is associated almost exclusively with bronzes of singular outstanding quality, made approximately 1880-1900. Born in Lille, France, little is known about the life of Emmanuel Villanis, despite the fact that he has a simply incredible level of output during the years of 1880-1920. First exhibiting at Salon in 1886, he went on to exhibit nearly five-hundred models, almost exclusively featuring the female form with a strong influence of the Art Nouveau movement evident in every aspect of his work. He received an honorable mention at the 1889 Exposition Universelle, Paris. The present example was cast in many different sizes and is generally found in a smaller and less prominent dimension. Of simply outstanding execution and quality, this is a very Fine acquisition for any serious collector of antique French bronzes from the Art Nouveau period.
