16th Century Pieta, of the Seated Virgin Holding the Body of the Dead Christ

About

16th century Pieta, of the seated virgin holding the body of the dead Christ, circa 1580 Follower: Jacopo Sansovino (Italian 1486-1570) Polychrome terracotta Measures: 16" x 11" x 6.5" inches This historically significant and very beautiful miniature Pietà clearly follows in the later orbit of the pre-eminent High Renaissance sculptor of Venice, Jacopo Sansovino (1486-1570). It also directly recalls the work of a presumed youthful contemporary of his—that is, of a possibly younger sculptor also active in Florence and Tuscany, before the commencement of Sansovino’s activity in Venice in 1527—namely the anonymous “Master of the Unruly Children,” a Central Italian sculptor of the earlier 16th century, who specialized in terracotta groups involving one or more mischievous youngsters. From that master’s characteristic works the present group inherits the overall form of its reduced dimensions; the very close prototypes for its Virgin’s face—with its downcast eyes, prominent nose, distinctive upper lip, and unusually small mouth—as well has her long neck; the strong, simplified folds of her drapery; and (above all) the exact chromatic parallels of her polychromy.
