About the Item

Francesco Androsi (Padua, 1713-1795) Aterus angel (c. 1760-1770) Carved and varnished pine wood, H. 100 x 35 x 55 cm Expertise Prof. Sava The present sculpture, depicting an angel without wings, was carved in pine wood, a very valuable type obtained from the stone pine. The little angel in a dynamic pose seems to want to free itself in the sky despite not having wings, this hypothesis is also confirmed by the gaze turned downwards, as if it were about to take flight. The opposing pose of the limbs suggests that originally the angel had to hold an attribute or a wooden complement, as was customary in religious and devotional contexts. The work is distinguished by the high artistic quality and the remarkable executive care, see the thin drapery of the silk band that surrounds it or the soft and puffy hair. Starting from these assumptions, which recall a typically eighteenth-century technique, one can certainly insert the angel within the Veneto area, more precisely in Padua, where the Bonazza's most important workshop of that time was located. Antonio Bonazza, the most important exponent of eighteenth-century Venetian realism, created a workshop in which Francesco Androsi (1713-1795), considered his most illustrious pupil, also appeared. Androsi had a prestigious position within the shop but later also in the city, since he held the role of farmer in the Fraglia, or congregation, of the stonecutters for several years. Specialized mainly in marble, among the works of Androsi we can mention the angels carved for the altar of San Gregorio Barbarigo in the Cathedral of Padua, which are a perfect comparison with the sculpture we have analyzed. Another example attributable to our terrified angel are those that adorn the portal of the church of San Giovanni Nepomuceno in Telve, where we find the same stylistic figures that still, despite the works were made when the artist was in old age, remember the master Bonazza.
