19th Century Bronze Statue: Bacchante

About the Item

This statue featuring a Bacchante is crafted of patinated bronze. In Roman mythology, Bacchae, or Bacchantes, were the female followers of Bacchus. They were often depicted in the company of Satyrs, dancing, playing tambourines and cymbals. Bacchantes were known as Maenads in Greek mythology. Our Bacchante is wearing a flowing tunic that reveals her breasts and legs, and holds a bunch of grapes, symbol of Bacchus. The figure is resting on a red Griotte marble base. Named for the griotte cherry for its deep color, Red Griotte was the favorite marble for Royal apartments in the 18th century, Circa :1870 Dimension: W: 9.4 in, D: 7,5in, H: 23.6in.
