Chinese Carved Ancestor Figure, c. 1800

About the Item

Ancestor worship was an integral part of traditional Chinese home life. This carved figure bears the likeness of one of its original owner's important forebears. A cat curves around the elder's right leg, a symbolic pairing associated with age, ancestry, and wisdom. A carved slot in the figures back was once a small compartment for written prayers. Rich with character from a century of use, this diminutive carved sculpture is a treasured keepsake with a vital connection to family history.
