19th Century Pair of Carved Entrance Guardians, Neoclassical Carved Sphinxes

About

A hugely decorative pair of extremely well carved neoclassical carved sphinxes off large scale. Used in history to guard entrances of evil, these would of likely been used to decorate a entrance on a large estate or country house. This particular pair are taken from the Greek depiction with a females head with a lions body recumbent on a rectangular base. The pair are weathered, with paint lose, splitting and age related ware. Highly likely to of been carved from lime wood Mid-late 19th century, English in origin Measures: base 84/39/6.5cm max length 94cm, max height 81cm, max depth 40cm.
