This late 19th century glazed earthenware mug was crafted in the studios of Cincinnati Ohio's renowned Rookwood Pottery Company and has a traditional form with an ear-shaped handle having a thumb rest. The exterior of the piece is finished in standard glaze and features hand painted decoration executed by highly regarded artist William Purcell McDonald (1864-1931). The decor has an appealing wine harvest theme consisting of grape vines that snake across the surface. The vines are studded with leaves in various shades of green along with two dangling clusters of plump reddish grapes. McDonald's application of paint is slightly raised in places giving the image a dimensional quality. The mug is further ornamented with an ornate silver overlay manufactured by Gorham. The silver decoration covers the handle and rim and includes a series of large etched foliate scrolls and flowers that extend across the body. There is also an eye-catching latticed area that provides a strong visual contrast with the gentle curving motifs found on the other parts of the silver overlay. The underside of the mug has an impressed RP mark along with shape 422 and the letter W. It also carries the incised initials of the artist - W. P. McD - and the letter L. This Steuben sculpture, titled Arcus, was designed in 1977 by British sculptor and designer Peter Aldridge (b.1947). Aldridge was graduated with distinction from London's Royal College of Art and worked as artist-in-residence at Steuben in 1977. A recipient of Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts, Aldridge went on to be appointed Steuben's Vice President and Creative Director. Aldridge began working as CEO of Scotland's prestigious North Lands Creative Glass center in 2007 before returning to New York in 2010, and currently serves on Steuben's Board of Trustees. His works are held in the permanent collections of London's Victoria & Albert Museum and the Corning Museum of Glass among other notable museums, and are also in private collections throughout the world. This striking geometric Aldridge sculpture has been given design number 0217 and is made from cast, cut and polished lead glass. The angular piece has a multifaceted construction consisting of a series of triangles, squares and rectangles which have been expertly cut and polished. The piece was included as one of a select number of nonjuried designs in the 1984 exhibition "50 Years on 5th - A Retrospective Exhibition of Steuben Glass."
