Art Deco Bronze Dancer Figure by Dorothea Charol

About

This lovely nude dancing figure is by Russian sculptress Dorothea Charol. She was Russian born, but lived and worked in Germany and France during the 1920s and 1930s and also designed porcelain figurines for Rosenthal.

The figure is cold painted and gilt, with minor wear, as can be observed, on the forward knee.

The dancer is wearing only a pair of slippers, and a headdress which is studded with marcasites. She's balanced on her toes, in a contrapposta pose, and one can imagine how her attenuated arms and hands are part of her balance.
