About the Item

After the model by Pierre (Pietro Francavilla) de Francheville) (1548-1615) This energetic model of an athlete in motion has finely detailed musculature. The patina is a rich brown typical of early European bronze statuettes. The left hand is missing. Measurements include the modern black marble base. Comparative literature: H.R. Weihrauch, Europäische Bronzestatuetten 15.-18. Jahrhundert, Brunswick, 1967, p. 235, no. 284 Similar statuettes are in the collections of the Walters Art Gallery (Baltimore) and the Musee National de la Renaissance (Ecouen) Another was sold by Sotheby's (New York), January 11, 1995 Lot 210 (Cyril Humphris Collection) Provenance: Christies (New York) and the Seattle Art Museum
