About the Item

Vintage mid century porcelain figurine depicting "Don Quichote de La Mancha" on his horse "Rocinant" designed by Carl Werner for Hutschenreuther Kunstabteiling. Very well crafted and beautiful handpainted figurine. Measurements: H 18 x W 9 x D 18 cm Signature: On the base a orange/brown stamp with Hutschenreuther Germany (mark used from 1969); a sticker with Porzellanfabriken Hutschenreuther Kunstabteilung 0248008 8228; Imprinted underglaze "C. Werner" "AM". Condition: In very good vintage condition; free of any chips, cracks or breaks. Don Quichote or Don Quixote is a novel by Miguel de Cervantes published in two parts (1605 and 1615). It was first written in Spanish and soon afterwards translated to English and it is considered to be the first modern novel. The main character of the story is Alonso Quixano, a rich middle-aged man. Quixano, having read many tales about chivalry and knights, goes crazy and believes that he's a knight named Don Quixote. He rides around the country with his squire, Sancho, having adventures. He believes his adventures are real, but everyone else laughs at him. In 1814 Carl Magnus Hutschenreuther starts the Porzellanfabrik C.M. Hutschenreuther (1814 - 1969) as the first industrial porcelain manufacturer in Bayern. After his death his son Lorenz Hutschenreuther takes over leadership of the company but leaves the company in 1857 to start in Selb his own porcelain manufacturer the Porzellanfabrik Lorenz Hutschenreuther. In 1904 the C.M. Hutschenreuther changes into an "AG" (Limited company) and starts to take over several porcelain manufacturers in the neighborhood (like Porzellanfabrik Arzberg in 1918). In 1969 the manufacturers C.M. Hutschenreuther and Lorenz Hutschenreuther join together in the Hutschenreuther AG in Selb until 1998. From then the company is called "BHS tabletop" and it manufactures household-, table-, hotel- and ornamental porcelain, figurines and gift products until today.
