Chanteur Florentin Du XVe Siècle a Classical French Bronze of a Troubadour

About the Item

Chanteur florentin du XVe siècle A classical 19th century French bronze of a young troubadour playing a lute. The musician seems transported by the song he is playing, carefully watching his hand as he sings. Troubadours were a class of knightly poet-musicians in 11th-13th century Southern France, they often sang of courtly love. Paul Dubois (1829-1905) Paul Dubois was a French painter and sculptor, he came from a wealthy family and studied in Rome for four years. He was commissioned by many high status individuals and created many works of note including sculptures of Joan of Arc and a design for the victory medal of Belgium. Chanteur florentin du XVe siècle ‘The young Troubadour’ was one of his early works that brought much popular success and was reproduced many times. F Barbedienne Fondeur (1810-1892) Ferdinand Barbedienne was a French metalworker and bronze founder. He started his career creating bronze miniatures of famous works held in museums, making these artworks accessible to the everyday person. In 1870 they briefly turned their hand to cannon founding for the Franco-Prussian war. They are notable as being one of the founders to work with Rodin.

  • 19th Century French Patinated Bronze Bust of a Soldier
    By Paul Dubois
    Located in Dallas, TX
Cast in France during the 1800s, this patinated bronze bust depicts a woman soldier, based on the style of hair and the ceremonial accoutrement on the armor cuirass. Our stoic soldier has a four-petal flower adorning the breastplate (to the viewer’s left of the artist’s signature-Dubois). On each side of the flower is a dangling strap for the helmet that protects the heroine. At the top of the helmet is a mythical creature, resembling a dragon with a long three-prong tail, with the outer two tendrils curling along the sides of the helmet. A thick bun protrudes from the back of the open cabasset-style helmet. The style of the helmet is reminiscent of the 19th century Paul Dubois bronze...
