About the Item
Evocative and beautiful, this highly rare bronze sculpture of a nude male youth, dreamily looking into the distance, was sculpted by Walker Hancock in 1938. The artist is best known for his massive sculpture of an angel holding a dying, half-nude soldier in his arms at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, commissioned by the Pennsylvania Railroad as a memorial to its employees who died in World War II. Early in his career, Hancock sculpted a pediment sculptural group for the new post office building in Washington, D.C., now the William Jefferson Clinton Federal Building, and sculpted this bronze four years later. Starting in 1930, he maintained a studio in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and often used local Finnish-American men as his models, so the subject of "Day Dream" may have been a local Finnish youth. The artist chaired the sculpture department at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts for years, and served as one of the famed "Monuments Men" in Europe during World War II.
