About the Item

At once graceful and dynamic, this rare and important Art Deco bronze by Marcel Bouraine is a combination of silvered and ebonized bronze. The base is also ebonized. It is from the collection of a Fifth Avenue estate. "Bouraine was initially largely autodidact, but also for a time pupil of the sculptor Alexandre Falguière . During the First World War , Bouraine became a German war prisoner and was interned in Switzerland. Here he produced several monuments, including one for the city of Lausanne. At the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva, he studied with Max Le Verrier and Pierre Le Faguays, who remained zeitfreund's friends and collaborated frequently. In the 1920s, he exhibited in Paris at the Tuileries Salon (1922,) the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon des Artistes Français. He designed smaller sculptures for Parisian foundries such as Susse Frères, Edmond Etling, Max Le Verrier and the foundry of the Austrian Arthur Goldscheider, a son of Friedrich Goldscheiders. In the 1920s, Bouraine frequently exhibited his works in the context of exhibitions of the artist groups La Stèle (modern sculpture) founded by Arthur Goldscheider and L'Evolution (decorative art.) In the category of sculpture, he participated in the art contest of the Summer Olympics in Paris in 1924. In 1928 Bouraine received a series of assignments from the sculptor Gabriel Argy-Rousseau (1885-1953), including a female fountain, a fountain and an illuminated group, all of which were executed in colored translucent Pâte de verre glass . At the Salon d'Automne, he showed the three translucent statues Baigneuse, Danseuse and Jeunesse, which had been made by the Société Anonyme of the Pere de Verre d'Argy-Rousseau. In 1935, the city of Paris bought a bust of terracotta . He created a large sculpture for the Sèvres- Pavillon at the world exhibition, Paris 1937. During the Second World War, Bouraine retreated to Biot (Alpes-Maritimes) and manufactured whistle heads of the OPTIM brand. Bouraines work was inspired by realism and art déco. He worked mostly with bronze, ivory, Chryselephantin, glass and ceramics. Many of his works have classical themes and show mythological characters such as Pan and Satyre , but also athletic women figures like the Roman goddess Diana in hunting or with shield and spear as well as the Amazon queen Penthesilea. His work includes some animal sculptures like Tiger or Marabus. He used his artists Derenne and Briand mainly for his works of metal, which were not made of bronze and produced by Max Le Verrier. Bouraine was liaised with the Romanian artist Aurore Onu.".
