"Driving the Plow, " Large, Powerful Bronze Sculpture with Half-Nude Male Figure
About the Item
Large and rare, this bronze sculpture depicting a half-nude laborer in the field, straining to move his plow through the soil, was sculpted by Jeanne Bertrand, an important French-American artist whose works are scarce and important. Many sculptors in the early 20th century depicted laborers overcoming great odds, but in this case the anguish and suffering of the worker gives this piece emotional weight and substance. Bertrand studied sculpture with Cartaino di Scarrino Pietro, but is primarily known for her photography. She lived for a time with Vivian Maier, widely acclaimed now as an important 20th century street photographer. The bronze is boldly signed.
