Early Italian Renaissance Wooden Angel Sculptures Gilded Tuscany, circa 1470

About

Pair of Angel candleholders Painted and gilded wooden sculptures Tuscany, probably Siena, circa 1470 Measures: 21.65 in x 7.48 in x 13.77 22.04 in x 7.48 in x 13.77 55 cm x 19 cm x 35 cm 56 cm x 19 cm x 35 cm State of conservation: some repainting of the eyes. The gilding and the colors are for the most part well preserved; some small gaps in the gilding and in the painting. A crack in the wood on the left wrist of an angel. Over the course of the fifteenth century, wooden sculpture saw a notable development especially in central Italy and in particular in the area around Siena, where it held considerable importance due to the presence of excellent sculptors who expressed themselves through the art of wood sculpture. Among the “maestri lignari” stood Domenico di Niccolò (1362-1453 ante), known as Cori, who had a great influence in the Tuscan city’s workshops. Other artisans were Francesco di Valdambrino (1363-1435) and Lorenzo di Pietro called il Vecchietta (1410-1480). The two angels in the candle holders, which are workshop sculptural works, are genuflecting as a sign of reverence. Their robes cross over the chest descending along the body and leaving barely uncovered the leg. The legs support, on the knee, a turned candlestick, which is held with both hands. The dress has a square neckline and a hint of an emblem on the chest. The sleeves are embellished at the shoulders with wavy elements with a gothic-style motif. The head is covered by thick hair, which falls to the shoulders in large curls and is collected on the forehead by a small pointed diadem. Although it is an artwork of a workshop, there are many stylistic elements that lead us to ascribe these sculptures more to Domenico dei Cori than to other personalities of Siena: the oval face, the half-closed lips and a certain calm composure in the expression are very reminiscent of the influence of the great Sienese "Mastro lignario" or, rather, to sculptors who were inspired by him.
