French 19th Century Louis XVI St. Terra Cotta Statue, Signed Clodion
About the Item
A beautiful and high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. terra cotta statue, signed Clodion. The statue is raised by a lovely darker patina terra cotta base with a fine mottled design and a tied fluted wrap around band. The charming and exceptionally well executed grouping above depicts a mother and father playing with their two children. Each is draped in flowing garments wrapped in a lion's skin with a pan flute at his side and grapes in their hair. One child is sitting happily on his father's shoulders while the other is joyously dancing at their side while holding a pan flute. Each also displays finely detailed grapes in their hair and fine attention to detail. All original patina and lovely subject matter.
