This beautiful and rare French Art Deco figural accent lamp is from a design by Gerda Iro Gottstein (Gerdago), the prolific German costume designer and sculptor (1906-2002). The subject matter is the German dancer, Niddy Impekevon, in her costume for her performance "The Captive Bird" or "Der Gefangene Vogel". (Please see publicity postcard below). Her body and costume is executed in cold-painted French Bronze with head and arms in Ivorine and topped with a rhinestone studded tiara. (This and other sculptures of this same subject produced by Joseph Lorenzl and Otto Poertzel are usually known as "The Butterfly Dancer" or "The Bat Dancer"). The figure is mounted to a painted metal base and placed in front of a white alabaster disk shade. This shade is held in place by a cold-painted geometrically embossed triangular clasp. Behind this is the light fitting that is in turn backed with a painted metal, scalloped leaf shaped reflector. This rare lamp has been re-wired, all paint is original and it is in exceptional condition.
