Grand Tour Bronze Colonne Vendôme XIX
About the Item
French antique model in gilded bronze Grand Tour de la Vendôme column, dating from around 1880. This splendid bronze thermometer (Celsius and Fahrenheit) represents Napoleon I from the original by Charles-Emile Seurre. The construction of the original Vendôme column has been started in 1806 under the direction of Napoleon to celebrate the victory of Austerlitz, and completed in 1810. It rests on an elegant platform base in black marble. This superb high quality bronze is superbly cast and has an elegant golden patina. It is made using the lost wax process, otherwise known as the "lost wax" method. Attention to detail and quality throughout this piece is second to none. Condition: good condition, has some chips on the marble. The Vendôme column original in the center of the square was erected by Napoleon I to commemorate the battle of Austerlitz; it was demolished on May 16, 1871, by decree of the Paris Commune.
