"Heavy-Lidded Female Head" Dignified Art Deco Sculpture by WPA Artist

About the Item

Clearly influenced by stylized Etruscan and African sculpture, this heavy-lidded female head is a classic example of Art Deco design. The artist was Jean de Marco, who was born in France, studied at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs, and later settled in America. He exhibited widely at museums such as the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of fine Arts, as well as private galleries such as Marie Sterner, Boyer and Bucholz. De Marco worked on WPA projects and public monuments, such as the figure of Columbia for the World War II Memorial at the Presidio in San Francisco. This remarkable piece is composed if a buff-colored clay speckled with black that closely resembles stone.
