Indian Red Sandstone Female Deity Fragment, Mounted, 12th Century

About the Item

Carved red sandstone bust of a female deity, India, circa 10th-12th century. The fragment itself measures 8.5 inches tall by 4.5 inches wide and deep, and stands 14.5 inches overall including its custom mid-century base. The sculpture depicts a serene female figure adorned with elaborate coiffure and a richly detailed necklace, her downcast gaze conveying both beauty and divinity. Once part of a larger temple carving, this fragment embodies the sensuous modeling and refined ornament typical of medieval Indian art. Mounted in the 1950s on a blackened wood base in the mid-century style, the piece reflects a collecting tradition that presented antiquities as modern sculpture, a practice embraced by discerning collectors and museums of the era. The juxtaposition of ancient carving and modernist base enhances its display as both artifact and timeless work of art. At over 14 inches tall on its mount, the bust has commanding presence, more substantial than the smaller sandstone fragments more commonly encountered at auction. Comparable examples of similar scale and quality have achieved strong results internationally, underscoring its rarity and desirability
