"Merman Riding Dolphin, " Rare, Large Art Deco Sculpture with Male Nude

About the Item

Sleek and sensual, this large, extraordinary porcelain sculpture was created by Kai Nielsen, Denmark's leading figurative sculptor in the first decades of the 20th century. Nielsen was fascinated with nude human figures relating to sea animals such as dolphins and returned to this subject again and again throughout his career. Here, he captures the lithe, athletic figure of a young merman, who is carrying a playful baby holding onto his hair. He sculpted this piece for Bing and Grondahl, one of the leading porcelain manufacturers in Scandinavia, and this piece is bathed in a beautiful, snow-white glaze. Nielsen is best known for sculpting "The Water Mother" for the winter garden of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen in 1921. Measures: 17.5".

  • "Male Athlete with Kettlebell", Rare Bronze Sculpture with Male Nude by Seifert
    By Franz Seifert
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
This highly rare bronze of a nude male athlete preparing to left a heavy kettlebell weight was sculpted by an Austrian artist, Franz Seifert, in 1922. Although Seifert is known for his nude figures straining to accomplish physical tasks -- such as carrying a large bucket or splitting a stone -- this sculpture is the only example known to exist. A decade after this sculpture was cast, Seifert carved a marble portrait of Siegfried Marcus, inventor of the gasoline-powered car, for a monument in Vienna, which includes a nude male figure in bas relief racing forward on the upper edge of an automobile wheel. He also created a large sculpture grouping honoring Empress Elizabeth...
