Pair of framed Roundels in Black Jasperware, Wedgwood, circa 1920

About the Item

An exceptionally fine pair of roundels in black jasperware, decorated with two images of Cupid: The first sharpening his arrows; the second, of him stringing his bow. Cupid is a popular figure from ancient Roman mythology who is commonly depicted as a winged child or young adult carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows. He is often associated with love, desire, and affection, and is known as the Roman god of love. Cupid's origin can be traced back to the ancient Greek god Eros, who was also associated with love and desire. In Roman mythology, Cupid is the son of Venus, the goddess of love, and Mars, the god of war. He is often depicted as a playful and mischievous figure, who uses his arrows to inspire feelings of love and desire in both gods and mortals. In art, Cupid is often depicted as a cherubic figure with wings, carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows. The arrows are said to have the power to cause feelings of love and desire in those who are struck by them, and they are sometimes depicted with a sharp point on one end and a heart-shaped tip on the other. Cupid has been a popular figure in art and literature throughout history, and has been depicted in a variety of ways, from playful and mischievous to more serious and contemplative. He remains a popular symbol of love and affection in modern times.

    By Wedgwood
    Located in Melbourne, Victoria
A jasper medallion decorated with Aphrodite, set in cut steel as a buckle, probably by Matthew Boulton. Original box. The Greek goddess Aphrodite is often depicted in ancient art with a dolphin. In mythology, dolphins were considered sacred to Aphrodite, and they were associated with love, beauty, and fertility. According to one legend, Aphrodite emerged from the sea on a shell-borne chariot drawn by dolphins, and the creatures were said to be her faithful servants. As a result, images of Aphrodite with dolphins became a popular motif in Greek art, appearing on vases, sculptures, and other decorative objects. The association between Aphrodite and dolphins has continued through the centuries, and the image of the goddess with a dolphin remains a popular symbol of love and beauty. Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) was an English manufacturer and entrepreneur who was best known for his contributions to the Industrial Revolution...

  • Wedgwood Black Basalt Figure of Cupid
    By Wedgwood
    Located in New Orleans, LA
An important homage to love, this large black basalt figure is an impressive example of Wedgwood's artistry and imagination. Cupid, the ancient Roman god of love, is standing amongst billowing clouds with a pair of doves at his feet. Gazing towards earth with one hand shielding his eyes, the other hand holds an arrow. His bow and quiver rest at his side, ready to take aim. "CUPID" is etched into the base. Considered a crowning achievement of Wedgwood, black basalt was created by blending manganese with an iron-oxide rich slurry procured from coal mines called carr. In addition to the impressive color, this combination also provided additional strength and solidity. While it initially proved challenging to fire because of its weight, that same characteristic was advantageous in creating ornaments, lending stability to library...
