Pair of Large Orientalist Bronze Figures by Emile Pinedo and Marcel Debut

About the Item

A pair of large Orientalist bronze figures by Emile Pinedo and Marcel Debut French, Late 19th Century Arabe en Marche: height 65cm, width 42cm, depth 28cm Porteur d'Eau Tunisien: height 65cm, width 25cm, depth 28cm Modelled as an 'Arabe En Marche' and 'Porteur d'Eau Tunisien', by Pinedo, Emile (French, 1840-1916), and Debut, Marcel (French, 1865-1933) respectively, these excellent Orientalist sculptures were cast in Pinedo's foundry in Paris in the late nineteenth century. The first depicts an Arabic bearded man, wearing a turban and robe open to the front, stepping forward in a confident, self-assured manner, carrying a walking stick across his back, with a knife tucked into the sash at his waist. The other depicts a young clean-shaven man, a Tunisian, carrying water in a pair of urns, one in each hand, approaching with a curious, inquisitive mood. They are both signed for the artists, stamped for the foundry of 'Pinedo / Bronzes / Paris,' and bear title plaques: the first, 'Arabe en Marche, Exp'n des Beaux-Arts, Paris,' the other, 'Porteur d'Eau Tunisien, Par Debut, 1' Prix de Rome.'

A pair of Orientalist terracotta figures by Johann Maresch Austrian, Late 19th Century Man: height 49cm, width 20cm, depth 15cm Woman: height 48cm, width 20cm, depth 15cm Depicting a woman and a man of similar appearance, age, dress, and in a similarly spritely, lively, and engaging manner, these figures were made by Johann Maresch in the late nineteenth century, c.1880. A skilled Austrian maker, similar in output to the more famous Friedrich Goldscheider, Maresch gave these figures a tangible vitality and energy to their representation, showing them as hard-working yet undaunted and undimmed by their labours. Their manner of dress is similar, even down to the similarities in the colours used to paint them. She carries a bright orange-red urn...
